A Community Consultant Role with Real Influence
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications from motivated Consultant Psychiatrists in General Adult Psychiatry to join the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) based at Anchor House, Southampton.
This is a senior leadership role focused on delivering high-quality, recovery-oriented care for adults with complex mental health needs. You will work closely with primary care, acute services, and community partners to ensure patients receive coordinated, person-centred support.
As part of your appointment, eligible candidates may receive a £30,000 Golden Hello, recognising the importance of experienced consultant leadership within community services.

Role Purpose
You will provide senior clinical leadership within the CMHT, ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based care for adults living with severe and enduring mental illness. The role includes Responsible Clinician and Approved Clinician responsibilities where appropriate, alongside strategic involvement in service development.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care and Leadership
- Deliver specialist psychiatric assessment, formulation, and treatment planning
- Provide clinical oversight for complex and high-risk cases
- Work collaboratively with GPs, crisis teams, inpatient units, and community partners
- Promote recovery-focused and trauma-informed practice
- National guidance on evidence-based mental health care
Service Development and Governance
- Contribute to service and business planning
- Participate fully in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement
- Support development of integrated community pathways
- Overview of NHS clinical governance principles
Education and Workforce Development
- Provide supervision and appraisal for junior medical staff
- Support training within the Modernising Medical Careers framework
- Participate in academic meetings, lectures, and internal CPD programmes
- Guidance on medical appraisal and revalidation
Professional and Organisational Duties
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation
- Participate in annual job planning and appraisal
- Ensure services operate effectively alongside local managers
- Support safe rotas aligned with Working Time Regulations
- Working hours and safety standards for doctors
Legal and Statutory Responsibilities
- You will be expected to practise within UK legislative and professional frameworks, including:
- Maintaining GMC registration and licence to practise
- Holding Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician status (or working towards)

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Full General Medical Council (GMC) registration
- MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
- CCT in General Adult Psychiatry (or within 12 months of interview)
- Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register
- Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act
Desirable
- Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc or similar)
- Liaison psychiatry accreditation
- Approved Clinician status at commencement
