Shape Early Mental Health Support for Children and Young People
An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced clinician to join the Wellbeing in Mind Team (Mental Health Support Team – MHST) in Selby as a Band 7 Clinical Specialist.
This role sits at the heart of the national ambition to improve access to timely mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people within schools and colleges. Working directly within education settings, you will provide leadership, specialist advice, and targeted interventions that promote resilience, early identification, and recovery.
The Purpose of the Role
As Clinical Specialist, you will provide professional and clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team delivering early intervention and low-intensity mental health support.
You will act as a trusted resource for education staff, helping them build confidence and skills in supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing while ensuring safe, evidence-based care.
How the Service Works
The Wellbeing in Mind Team operates through three equally balanced areas of activity:
1. Whole-Setting Wellbeing Development
- Support schools and colleges to strengthen their mental health strategies
- Assist with the creation or review of wellbeing policies
- Develop practical resources and deliver awareness campaigns
- Provide teaching sessions, assemblies, and PSHE input
- This aligns with the government’s national programme to expand mental health support in education.
2. Advice, Consultation, and Staff Support
- Offer both formal and informal consultation to teaching and pastoral teams
- Build staff capability to recognise and respond to emotional distress
- Strengthen early identification and prevention approaches
- Guidance on supporting pupils’ mental health in schools is available
3. Direct Clinical Work with Young People
- Deliver assessments and brief psychological interventions
- Provide low-intensity, evidence-based approaches, commonly using CBT principles
- Work collaboratively with families and education staff
- National information on children and young people’s mental health services
- Each of these areas represents approximately one-third of the team’s workload.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership
- Provide specialist mental health guidance across education settings

Partnership Working
- Collaborate with schools, colleges, local authorities, and community services
- Maintain strong professional relationships with multiple stakeholders
- Work as part of a wider leadership group alongside Team Managers and Clinical Leads
Risk Management and Safeguarding
- Undertake assessments addressing risk to self, others, and vulnerability
- Ensure safeguarding responsibilities are consistently met
- Safeguarding guidance for professionals working with children
- Service Improvement
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
- Support continuous enhancement of clinical pathways
- Promote inclusive, stigma-free services
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Registration with an appropriate UK professional body such as:
- NMC
- GMC
- HCPC
- Social Work England
- Check professional registration requirements
- For nursing roles, recognised Practice Supervisor/Assessor or equivalent experience is required.
- All applicants must demonstrate competence in providing clinical supervision.
A postgraduate diploma or higher qualification relevant to the specialty is required, or willingness to achieve this within two years, alongside significant Band 6 (or equivalent) experience and evidence of ongoing CPD.
Knowledge and Experience
Strong understanding of current regional and national priorities in child and adolescent mental health
Practical experience applying legislation such as:
- Mental Health Act
- Mental Capacity Act
- Overview of the Mental Capacity Act
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams
- Proven ability to assess and manage clinical risk
- Involvement in audit or service improvement work
