Role Overview

Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS FT is seeking a compassionate, ambitious, and inspirational nursing leader to join our Division of Surgery. This senior leadership role focuses on driving quality, patient safety, clinical effectiveness, and exceptional patient experience across surgical services.

The Deputy Divisional Nurse will work closely with Matrons, the Divisional Nurse, and wider clinical leadership to foster an environment where patients are at the heart of decision-making. The post-holder will oversee General Surgery, Head & Neck, Urology, Breast, Vascular Surgery, Endoscopy, Orthopaedics, and MEOC services across the DBTH footprint, ensuring evidence-based, safe, and high-quality care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional leadership to nursing teams, inspiring, motivating, and empowering staff to deliver outstanding patient care
  • Promote patient safety, quality improvement, and a “just culture” throughout the division
  • Collaborate with Matrons and senior teams to develop and implement workforce strategies, including recruitment, retention, and career pathway development
  • Ensure compliance with clinical governance, NHS policies, and evidence-based standards across all surgical services
  • Influence local policies and service delivery to achieve sustainable improvements
  • Lead and support change management initiatives, service reconfiguration, and quality improvement projects
  • Represent the Division in collaboration with external partners, including Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), national teams, and other NHS Trusts

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential:

  • Proven track record of sustained nursing leadership at a middle or senior management level
  • Experience in workforce planning, recruitment, retention, and career development
  • Ability to manage complex teams and resolve staffing challenges
  • Strong understanding of NHS system reforms and policy frameworks
  • Demonstrated experience in promoting patient safety and quality improvement

Desirable:

  • Experience in policy development and implementation at Trust or service level
  • Involvement in service development, reconfiguration, and strategic planning

Qualifications & Training

Essential:

  • Registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) – Sub Part 1 or 2
  • First-level degree in a relevant field
  • Evidence of continuous professional development, including leadership, clinical practice, and quality improvement

Desirable:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent postgraduate study
  • Postgraduate qualification in a clinical subject or Qii coaching qualification
