About the Role

We are seeking a qualified and compassionate Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT) to join our Mortuary and Bereavement Services team. This is a highly specialist role requiring technical expertise, emotional resilience, and a strong commitment to dignity, professionalism, and care.

You will provide essential technical and scientific support across Trust mortuary facilities, including high-risk post-mortem environments. The role involves regular exposure to sensitive and emotionally challenging situations, alongside periods of physically demanding work requiring focus and precision.

Working closely with pathologists, coronial services, police, funeral directors, and bereaved families, you will play a vital part in ensuring that deceased patients are cared for with respect and that all work meets the highest professional, ethical, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

As an Anatomical Pathology Technologist, your responsibilities will include:

  • Receiving, identifying, storing, and releasing deceased patients in line with Trust policies and Human Tissue Authority (HTA) standards
  • Assisting with and undertaking post-mortem examinations, including routine, forensic, independent, and high-risk cases
  • Providing technical support to pathologists and accurately documenting post-mortem findings
  • Preparing the deceased for viewings and formal identification, working sensitively with relatives and external agencies
  • Collecting, labelling, packaging, and transferring specimens for histology, microbiology, toxicology, DNA, and other analyses
  • Maintaining precise records using EDEN and other approved digital systems
  • Supporting the supervision and development of trainees and support staff under guidance
  • Contributing to audits, quality improvement initiatives, and standard operating procedure (SOP) reviews
  • Working flexibly across mortuary sites and participating in the on-call rota to support 24-hour service provision
  • Ensuring compliance with infection prevention, health & safety, and statutory regulations

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must hold one of the following:

  • RSPH Certificate and Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology
    OR
  • Level 4 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology

Additional essential requirements include:

  • Membership of the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technology (AAPT)

Desirable:

  • Registration with the Science Council and/or the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS)

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience working in a hospital or public mortuary
  • Experience assisting with post-mortem examinations, including high-risk cases
  • Experience working within an HTA-licensed facility
  • Participation in an out-of-hours or on-call service
  • Sound knowledge of human anatomy, pathology, and medical terminology
  • Ability to communicate with empathy and sensitivity when supporting bereaved families

Desirable

  • Experience supporting trainees or support staff
  • Involvement in audits, SOP reviews, or service improvement projects
  • Experience working within a combined Mortuary and Bereavement Service
  • Exposure to Home Office, defence, or independent post-mortem work
