About the Role
The School of Law, Politics and Sociology at the University of Sussex invites applications for a part-time Assistant Professor in Politics to join the department on a fixed-term basis. This post is offered to provide teaching and academic support during a period of research leave within the team and sits on the Education and Scholarship pathway.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality undergraduate teaching, supporting student learning, and contributing to assessment and academic administration. You will convene the module The Far Right and the Politics of Immigration, and contribute lectures and seminars to modules such as:
- Feminism and the Politics of Gender
- The Neoliberal Age? Interpreting Modern Britain
- Other core undergraduate modules within Politics, as required
This is an excellent opportunity for an engaged and motivated academic to contribute to a vibrant teaching environment within a research-led department.
About You
You will be an enthusiastic and capable educator with:
- A PhD in Politics or a closely related discipline
- Experience of teaching in higher education, ideally at undergraduate level
Subject expertise aligned with one or more of the following areas:
- Far-right parties and movements
- Immigration and migration politics
- Feminism and gender politics
- British politics and political economy
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to academic work
- You will be committed to inclusive teaching, student support, and working effectively as part of a collegial academic team.
About the Department
Politics at Sussex is a well-established, research-led department with a strong national and international reputation. The department includes around 20 faculty members and teaches approximately 600 students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
We are home to the internationally recognised Sussex European Institute and the Centre for the Study of Corruption, and have particular strengths in:
- British and comparative politics
- Party politics and political behaviour
- Citizenship, migration, and governance
- Populism, protest, anti-politics, and challenges to democratic order
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), 96% of our outputs were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. Student satisfaction is also strong, with 85% of respondents in the National Student Survey rating our teaching positively.
