About the Role

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated and experienced Specialty Doctor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to join its well-established service at Musgrove Park Hospital. This is a varied and rewarding role offering a balanced job plan across outpatient clinics, day surgery, inpatient care and (depending on experience) participation in the second-tier on-call rota.

You will work across hospital and community settings serving a population of approximately 600,000, contributing to high-quality patient care while supporting service development, education, audit and research within one of the busiest Maxillofacial Units in the South West.

The department benefits from modern facilities, including digital imaging, CBCT and dedicated day-case theatres, and maintains strong multidisciplinary links with oncology, dermatology, orthodontics and restorative dentistry.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver safe, effective oral and maxillofacial care across outpatient, inpatient and day-case settings
  • Manage dento-alveolar surgery, oral infections, soft tissue procedures and minor trauma
  • Support theatre lists, clinics and day-surgery sessions
  • Supervise and support junior trainees, escalating appropriately to consultants
  • Contribute to clinical audit, governance, quality improvement and service development
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and clear communication with patients and colleagues
  • Take an active role in postgraduate teaching, training and research activity
  • Engage in ongoing CPD and the SAS development programme
  • Work collaboratively with consultants and the Clinical Director to ensure efficient service delivery

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Full GDC registration
  • MFDS / FDSRCS (or equivalent postgraduate qualification)
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a recognised Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department
  • Broad clinical competence across emergency and elective OMFS care
  • Ability to manage patient care under consultant supervision
  • Strong organisational, communication and teamwork skills
  • Commitment to teaching, audit and continuous professional development
  • Full UK driving licence (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Entry on the Specialist List in Oral Surgery
  • Experience in clinical research or publications
  • Formal teaching experience
  • Leadership in audit or quality-improvement projects
  • Strong IT literacy for clinical documentation and education
  • Disclosure & Background Checks
