Role Overview
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is offering a 12-month, full-time Trust Senior Registrar post in General Surgery, based at Yeovil District Hospital.
This post provides a broad and high-quality surgical experience and is ideally suited to doctors who have completed Core Surgical Training and are preparing for ST3 National Training Number (NTN) applications.
You will work at senior registrar level within a supportive consultant-led service, participating in a 1:8 on-call rota covering general surgery and urology, with consultant support across Yeovil District Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital.
Clinical Experience & Opportunities
The post offers wide-ranging exposure across general surgery, including:
- Colorectal surgery
- Benign upper gastrointestinal surgery
- Abdominal wall and hernia surgery
- Breast surgery
- Paediatric surgery
- Opportunities to assist in robotic-assisted procedures
You will be actively involved in:
- Emergency and elective surgical admissions
- Surgical decision-making and patient management
- Leading the on-call surgical team
- Supporting and supervising junior doctors
- Working closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, effective, patient-centred care
Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior registrar-level care to elective and emergency general surgical patients
- Participate fully in the general surgery and urology on-call rota
- Assess acute admissions, initiate investigations, and deliver treatment plans
- Perform emergency procedures within your level of competence
- Contribute to outpatient clinics, ward rounds, and SDEC services
- Support training and supervision of junior medical staff
- Engage in audit, quality improvement, and research activity
- Maintain high standards of clinical governance, documentation, infection control, and patient safety

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- MB ChB or equivalent medical degree
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise
- Valid ATLS provider certification
- MRCS (or equivalent)
- Completion of Core Surgical Training or equivalent
Essential Experience
- Minimum of 4 years postgraduate clinical experience
- Experience working within the UK, EU, or a comparable healthcare system (excluding observerships or clinical attachments)
