Role Summary
Are you a skilled sonographer with experience in general medical or obstetric ultrasound – or both? Do you enjoy delivering high‑quality diagnostic imaging within a supportive and forward‑thinking team? If so, you could be just who we’re looking for at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (SFT).
We are recruiting a motivated and professional Sonographer to work across Musgrove Park Hospital and community sites, providing a full range of ultrasound services in line with Band 7 practice standards.
About the Service
Our Diagnostic Ultrasound department is well equipped with state‑of‑the‑art GE and Canon imaging systems, backed by an established Sonographer training programme and 7‑day specialist Radiologist support. We also house dedicated Interventional Ultrasound facilities.
You will work within our refurbished Antenatal Unit, a vibrant 4‑bed service that cares for around 3,500 expectant women annually, supported by an integrated team of radiographers, nurses and midwives.
Key Responsibilities
As an Obstetric Sonographer you will:
- Work closely with the maternity team to deliver high‑quality antenatal ultrasound services.
- Support fetal screening programmes, including nuchal translucency assessments and achievement of performance standards (KPIs) across practice.
- Adapt communication to suit a wide range of patient needs, including sensitive or emotionally challenging situations.
As a General Medical Sonographer you will:
- Perform a broad range of general ultrasound examinations to a high professional standard.
- Report imaging findings clearly and accurately to aid clinical decision‑making.
- Maintain clinical governance and adhere to departmental protocols.
- You will be accountable for your own practice and expected to contribute to service development, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary working.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Registration:
- PgCert or PgDip in Medical Ultrasound (CASE accredited)
- Current UK professional registration (e.g., HCPC registration for Sonographers)
Experience:
- Proven recent NHS ultrasound experience.
- Excellent communication skills and a professional approach.
Desirable:
- Experience in small parts or paediatric ultrasound.
- Experience working within Saving Babies’ Lives care pathways.
- Full UK driving licence and use of a vehicle for travel between community sites.
