About the Role
The School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex invites applications for two Postdoctoral Research Fellows to join the “Technology and the (Future) Human in War” (TfHW) project, funded through the Leverhulme Trust Research Leaders Scheme.
TfHW investigates how modern conflict is increasingly mediated through advanced technologies, including:
- Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS)
- Weaponised Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Drones
- Cyber-operations
- Technologically enhanced soldiers
The project asks key questions: How do these technologies reshape the role of humans in war? What are the implications for soldiers, civilians, and societies affected by conflict? Case studies include Ukraine, Israel, and Yemen.
As a postdoctoral fellow, you will:
- Lead and co-author high-impact journal articles and an edited volume with the Principal Investigator
- Present findings at international conferences
- Co-lead two research workshops
- Conduct fieldwork interviews and develop follow-on research agendas
- Manage and utilise a generous research budget
- Receive active career development support
- Specialisation for Each Post:
- Ref 43028: Expertise in cyber-operations, ideally with experience related to the Ukraine-Russia conflict
- Ref 43027: Expertise in technologically enhanced soldiers (neuro/bio/techno), ideally with knowledge of the Israeli military
About You
The ideal candidate will:
- Be passionate about how technology reshapes modern conflict
- Bring expertise in cyber-operations, AI, military technology, or related fields
- Engage with feminist International Relations, Science & Technology Studies (STS), or other critical frameworks
- Contribute to the conceptual and analytical development of the TfHW project
- Work collaboratively with the Principal Investigator, second postdoctoral fellow, and research assistant
