Shape the Future of Secure Adolescent Mental Health Care

We are inviting applications for a Consultant Psychiatrist in Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to join Austen House, a newly configured 7-bedded adolescent low secure unit within Hampshire & Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a rare opportunity to help shape and lead a specialist service supporting young people with complex mental health needs and high levels of risk, delivering trauma-informed, recovery-focused care within a secure setting.

You will work closely with an experienced multidisciplinary team (MDT), offering expert clinical leadership while contributing to the ongoing development of a service designed around safety, collaboration, and therapeutic engagement.

Your Key Responsibilities

As Consultant Psychiatrist at Austen House, you will:

  • Provide expert psychiatric assessment, formulation, and treatment for adolescents within the low secure unit
  • Hold Responsible Clinician (RC) duties under the Mental Health Act
  • Lead clinical decision-making and risk management for a defined caseload
  • Guide and support the MDT in evidence-based, trauma-informed practice
  • Promote collaborative care planning with young people, families, and carers
  • Contribute to quality improvement, audit, and clinical governance
  • Support staff development, supervision, and training initiatives
  • Play an active role in shaping service pathways and future development

Essential Qualifications & Registration

You must have:

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
  • CCT in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, or within 6 months at interview
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register
  • Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act
  • A relevant higher qualification (e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or equivalent)
