We are seeking a committed and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist in Older People’s Mental Health to join our inpatient services at Gosport War Memorial Hospital.
This role offers the opportunity to provide clinical leadership, Responsible Clinician (RC) oversight, and high-quality inpatient care across two older adult mental health wards, including Rose Ward, within a supportive and well-established multidisciplinary team.
You will play a central role in shaping patient care, supporting colleagues, and contributing to service development within a newly integrated and forward-looking NHS Trust.
About the service and team
You will work as part of the Older People’s Mental Health (OPMH) inpatient team, covering two inpatient areas based at Gosport War Memorial Hospital. The team includes:
- A part-time Consultant Psychiatrist
- Three Resident Doctors
- One Middle Grade Doctor
- Experienced nursing, therapy, and ward-based MDT colleagues
This is a collaborative and supportive environment, with shared clinical decision-making and a strong emphasis on patient safety, dignity, and continuity of care.
Your role and responsibilities
As Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:
- Provide direct clinical care and psychiatric leadership for older adult inpatients
- Act as Responsible Clinician, including oversight of Mental Health Act responsibilities
- Lead on assessment, treatment planning, and risk management across wards
- Support and supervise junior medical staff, promoting learning and development
- Work closely with senior clinicians to ensure clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability within the MDT
- Encourage open communication, reflective practice, and shared decision-making
- Contribute actively to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement
- Play a role in service planning and development, including teaching and local academic activity

Essential qualifications & eligibility
You must have:
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
- CCT in Older People’s Psychiatry, or eligibility for the Specialist Register (or within 12 months at interview)
- Approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
- Current UK professional registration
- Pre-employment checks & right to work
- This post requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
