Job Description
About the Role
We’re looking for a passionate and experienced neurological physiotherapist to help lead our Neuro Outpatients service at Brighton General Hospital. This role suits an established Band 7 clinician or a confident Band 6 ready to step into their first leadership post with the right support.
You’ll work within a close‑knit, supportive team delivering specialist outpatient care to people with a wide range of neurological conditions, including complex and long‑term presentations. Alongside advanced clinical practice, you’ll share responsibility for the day‑to‑day leadership and development of the service—supporting colleagues, shaping pathways (including Functional Neurological Disorder care), and strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration.
This is a hands‑on leadership role with real scope to influence service quality, staff development, and patient experience.
What You’ll Be Doing
Clinical Practice
- Manage an advanced specialist caseload within Neuro Outpatients, working autonomously with people who may have complex, chronic, or fluctuating neurological presentations.
- Complete comprehensive assessments, develop evidence‑based treatment plans, and evaluate outcomes using advanced clinical reasoning.
- Provide expert advice to colleagues across the Trust and to external professionals such as GPs, OTs, Orthotists, and community neuro teams.
- Contribute to evening/weekend on‑call or orthopaedic services as required.
Leadership & Team Support
- Share operational leadership of the Neurological Outpatients Physiotherapy Team, including service planning, coordination, and evaluation.
- Deputise for the Clinical Team Leader when required.
- Supervise, mentor, and appraise Band 6 Physiotherapists, a Band 4 Technical Instructor, and students, fostering a supportive learning culture.
- Allocate work effectively, contribute to workforce planning, and support e‑rostering and budget awareness.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients who may have cognitive, communication, sensory, or language barriers.
- Support patients and carers to understand diagnoses, prognosis, and realistic rehabilitation goals.
- Work collaboratively with consultants, specialist nurses, community services, and wider MDT colleagues to coordinate care and develop pathways.
- Represent physiotherapy on specialty forums, steering groups, and service development initiatives.
Service Development & Governance
- Support implementation of Trust and departmental policies within the service.
- Identify opportunities for service improvement and innovation, monitoring outcomes to ensure high‑quality, equitable care.
- Contribute to clinical governance, including audit, risk management, evidence‑based practice, and quality improvement.
Equality, Inclusion & Professional Standards
- Actively promote inclusive practice, equitable access to care, and fair development opportunities for staff.
- Uphold professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities in line with Trust policy and professional standards.
What We’re Looking For
Essential
- Diploma or BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy (or overseas equivalent).
- Current UK professional registration.
- Substantial experience working at Band 6 level or above within neurological physiotherapy.
- Experience supervising junior staff and/or students.
- Ability to work independently, prioritise effectively, and contribute to operational decision‑making.
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, with evidence of learning or advocacy in this area.
Desirable
- Experience working at Band 7 or in a team‑lead role.
- Postgraduate leadership or management training.
