Senior Staff Nurse (Band 6) – Neonatal Unit

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, Truro

Are you a dedicated neonatal nurse ready to advance your career? We’re inviting applications for Band 6 Senior Neonatal Nurse positions in our friendly and supportive Neonatal Unit. This is a fantastic chance to build on your skills, step into more responsibility, and help shape high-quality care for newborns and their families.

We particularly welcome applications from experienced Band 5 nurses eager to progress, as well as those with prior leadership exposure. No extensive management background is required—we provide comprehensive training, mentorship, and ongoing support to help you thrive in this role and grow into leadership.

Key Responsibilities

In this position, you’ll play a central part in our multidisciplinary team, delivering outstanding care across intensive, high-dependency, and special care levels. Your main duties will include:

  • Providing expert, evidence-based nursing care to neonates and supporting their families with compassion and professionalism.
  • Assessing each baby’s needs, developing personalised care plans in collaboration with parents/carers, delivering care, and regularly reviewing outcomes ensuring everything is clearly recorded.
  • Championing Family-Centred Care by creating a warm, secure, and welcoming environment where families feel truly involved and supported.
  • Acting as an advocate for babies and their families, offering clear information, emotional support, and access to relevant services.
  • Taking on delegated leadership duties, such as managing the unit in the absence of senior sisters or the unit manager, while promoting safety, efficiency, and best use of resources.
  • Encouraging continuous improvement through research, evidence-based practice, and quality initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Serving as a clinical role model and resource for the team, sharing specialist knowledge and contributing to staff development.
