About the role

Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Locum Stroke Consultant to join its established and highly regarded Stroke Service. The successful appointee will play a central role in ensuring that all patients admitted with stroke receive timely, evidence-based, and high-quality care throughout their inpatient journey.

The post is primarily based on the Graham Stroke Unit, the Trust’s Acute Stroke Unit, with additional responsibility for providing specialist stroke input to patients located on general medical wards. You will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver safe, coordinated, and patient-focused stroke care across the hospital.

Stroke service overview

The Graham Stroke Unit operates in line with national clinical standards and actively participates in the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP). The unit provides acute stroke care and rehabilitation for the City and Hackney population and also delivers commissioned stroke rehabilitation beds for patients registered with Haringey primary care providers.

Strong rehabilitation pathways are in place with the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (RNRU) and the HTNRU, supporting patients with complex needs who require specialist inpatient rehabilitation following acute care.

Key responsibilities

As a Locum Stroke Consultant, you will:

• Provide day-to-day consultant-led care for inpatients on the Graham Stroke Unit
• Deliver specialist stroke input to medical outliers on general wards
• Ensure the Trust maintains its Stroke Unit and TIA Provider status
• Continue to develop and support the daily TIA service, including maintaining effective referral pathways with local GPs
• Work collaboratively with nursing and therapy teams to ensure adequate stroke unit capacity
• Liaise closely with the local Hyper Acute Stroke Centre to ensure smooth transfer and repatriation of patients following hyperacute treatment
• Contribute to service planning, including the future development of consultant and junior doctor roles
• Participate fully in departmental governance, audit, and quality improvement activity

Professional responsibilities

You will also be expected to:

• Deliver care aligned with national clinical guidance and Trust policies
• Maintain clear and timely communication with GPs, community services, and partner organisations
• Support clinical governance through audit, risk management, and participation in regional stroke audits
• Provide leadership within the Stroke Department and contribute to its operational management
• Supervise and support junior medical staff, including rota oversight where appropriate
• Maintain continuing responsibility for patients under your care, including associated administrative duties
• Develop specialty interests and contribute to research and service development activity

Person specification

Essential qualifications

• Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
• MRCP (UK) or equivalent
• On the Specialist Register or within six months of CCT in a relevant stroke parent specialty
• Stroke medicine experience equivalent to CCST level

Desirable qualifications

• Higher degree (MSc, MD, or PhD)
• CCT in Stroke Medicine
• Experience and skills

Essential:

• Ability to practise independently in Acute Medicine and Stroke Medicine
• Strong clinical judgement across a wide range of stroke and general medical presentations
• Excellent clinical and decision-making skills
• Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
• Evidence of engagement with clinical audit and risk management

Desirable:

• Leadership experience within an acute or stroke care team
• Experience in emergency or critical care medicine
• Research experience and peer-reviewed publications
• Experience supervising trainees or acting as an educational supervisor
• Leadership, management, and professionalism

You will demonstrate:

• The ability to lead, prioritise, and respond effectively to service pressures
• Awareness of the NHS operational and regulatory environment
• Understanding of workforce management, clinical coding, and compliance with EWTD
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• A compassionate, patient-centred approach to care
