About the Role

This is an opportunity to join a well-established inpatient service providing specialist care for older adults experiencing functional mental health conditions. We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to work exclusively within Westerdale North, a 20-bed mixed-sex inpatient ward, offering focused, high-quality clinical leadership without routine cross-cover responsibilities.

This post replaces a previous role and has been thoughtfully reviewed to ensure a sustainable and well-supported job plan, including enhanced non-medical Approved Clinician input. The consultant will be embedded fully within the ward team, enabling continuity of care and strong multidisciplinary working.

About Westerdale North

Westerdale North is based in purpose-built, modern facilities at Roseberry Park Hospital, having relocated in March 2023. The ward works closely alongside:

  • Westerdale South (older adults with organic mental health conditions)
  • General adult inpatient wards
  • Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Forensic inpatient services

Patients are primarily admitted from the Teesside area, and the ward has strong working relationships with community mental health teams, crisis services, and liaison teams, ensuring smooth care pathways.

Your Key Responsibilities

You will provide clinical and medical leadership to a skilled and enthusiastic multidisciplinary team, ensuring excellent, person-centred care.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Clinical responsibility for approximately 10–12 inpatients, supported by a Nurse Consultant
  • Leadership of holistic psychiatric assessment, formulation, and treatment planning
  • Participation in a daily weekday MDT board round, reviewing progress, risk, and care plans
  • Review of new admissions (shared with the Associate Nurse Consultant)
  • Regular involvement in admission, discharge planning, CPA meetings, and family discussions
  • Active engagement with families and carers, guided by the Triangle of Care
  • Promotion of safe, evidence-based prescribing in line with national standards
  • Contribution to a culture of learning, reflection, and continuous improvement
  • Job Planning and Supporting Professional Activity
  • 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week
  • 7.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC)
  • 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)
  • SPA time supports teaching, audit, quality improvement, CPD, and service development

Person Specification (Summary)

Essential Qualifications and Registration

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • MRCPsych or equivalent, or CESR
  • Eligible for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT)
  • Approved Clinician status (or ability to achieve within 3 months)
  • Section 12 approval (or ability to achieve within 3 months)

Clinical Skills and Experience

  • Extensive expertise in Older People’s Mental Health
  • Strong bio-psycho-social approach to assessment and treatment
  • Confident management of clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
  • Leadership, Teaching and Development
  • Ability to lead within a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to quality improvement and service development
  • Engagement in CPD, audit, and evidence-based practice
  • Experience in teaching or supervision of trainees (medical and non-medical)
  • Desirable attributes include leadership roles beyond the MDT, involvement in research or service innovation, and additional postgraduate qualifications.
