About the Role

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting opportunity for a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to join the Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale Community Learning Disability Team, part of the wider North Yorkshire, York & Selby Learning Disability Service.

This role is open to:

  • An experienced Band 8a psychologist
  • A Band 7 psychologist ready to progress
  • A newly or recently qualified psychologist through a supported Band 7–8a preceptorship pathway
  • We are looking for someone who is passionate about improving the lives of people with learning disabilities and who enjoys working creatively, collaboratively, and compassionately within community services.

What You’ll Be Doing

You will play a central role in delivering high-quality, psychologically informed care to people with learning disabilities, their families, carers, and staff teams.

Your work will include:

  • Providing psychological assessments, formulations, and interventions using adapted and evidence-based approaches
  • Delivering direct therapeutic work and indirect consultation with carers, families, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Completing neuropsychological assessments where appropriate
  • Offering reflective practice, consultation, and clinical supervision
  • Applying trauma-informed approaches to support complex presentations
  • Contributing to the team’s collective leadership, service development, audit, and research activity
  • You will work within a supportive multidisciplinary environment that actively encourages co-working, development of specialist interests, and innovation.

Training, Development and Academic Links

This post offers excellent opportunities for professional growth. The service has strong links with Doctoral Clinical and Counselling Psychology programmes at Teesside University, the University of Hull, and York St John University.

You will:

  • Support trainee placements and contribute to teaching
  • Access strong peer supervision, CPD, and professional networks

Be encouraged and supported to undertake further specialist training, such as:

  • EMDR
  • CBT
  • CAT
  • PBS
  • Systemic and Family Therapy
  • Flash techniques

About You

We are seeking an enthusiastic, reflective, and values-driven psychologist who can work effectively with complexity and uncertainty.

Essential requirements include:

  • HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist
  • Doctoral-level training in Clinical, Counselling, or Forensic Psychology (BPS accredited or equivalent)
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development
  • Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and manage complex risk
  • Strong commitment to patient-centred, evidence-based practice

Desirable attributes include:

  • Experience within Learning Disability services
  • Training in supervision and care coordination (or willingness to complete)
  • Experience of therapeutic approaches such as CBT, DBT, CAT, psychodynamic or systemic therapies
  • Experience in research, audit, or service development
  • Trainee Psychologist Applications

Applications are welcomed from psychologists currently completing their doctoral training, including:

  • Trainee Clinical Psychologists in their third year

Trainee Counselling Psychologists in their third year, with confirmation of:

  • Completion of all clinical competencies
  • At least 80% of required supervised clinical practice hours
  • Offers of appointment will be subject to successful qualification and HCPC registration.
  • Safeguarding and Pre-Employment Checks
  • This role is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
