Job Description
About the project
The Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our Atmospheric Composition, Radiation and Climate (ACRC) research group.
This role focuses on the non-CO2 effects of aviation on climate, a rapidly evolving research area with significant academic, industry, and policy interest. The position is part of the Horizon Europe project UNIC (Understanding Non-CO2 Impact for deCarbonized aviation), led by the French aerospace laboratory ONERA in collaboration with European partners. The project aims to improve scientific understanding of how non-CO2 aircraft emissions interact with atmospheric processes, including aerosol-cloud interactions.
Key responsibilities
As part of this role, you will:
- Develop and apply numerical models to study the impact of aircraft particulate emissions on cirrus clouds hours to days after emission
- Contribute to novel research on aerosol-cloud interactions in the context of aviation emissions
- Collaborate with international project partners to produce research of global significance
- Present results at project meetings and international conferences
- Publish findings in leading scientific journals
- Support the broader research objectives of the ACRC group and UNIC project
What we’re looking for
The ideal candidate will have:
- A PhD (or near completion) in Climate Science, Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics, or a related field
- Strong experience with numerical atmospheric models
- Excellent knowledge of atmospheric physics and cloud-aerosol processes
- Experience in scientific computing and data visualisation languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R, Fortran)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Knowledge of Large Eddy Modelling (LEM) is advantageous but not essential
- Contract and working arrangements
- Fixed-term 34-month contract
- Full-time (35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE)
- Based at Whiteknights Campus, Reading
- Skilled Worker visa sponsorship may be possible; applicants should check eligibility via the UK Visas and Immigration guidance
