Role Overview
We are seeking a committed and experienced Consultant in General Adult Liaison Psychiatry to provide senior clinical leadership within our established and highly regarded liaison psychiatry service at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.
This post sits at the heart of the acute hospital, delivering expert psychiatric assessment and management for adults presenting with complex mental health needs across the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit, and inpatient wards. You will play a pivotal role in shaping clinical decision-making, managing risk, and ensuring safe, compassionate, and effective care for patients at times of significant vulnerability.
Working within a skilled multidisciplinary team, you will provide consultant-level oversight, act as Responsible Clinician for detained patients, and support colleagues across medical and surgical specialties.
What You’ll Be Doing
In this senior clinical role, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing timely, high-quality psychiatric assessments and treatment plans for adults presenting with acute mental health needs
- Offering clinical leadership to the liaison psychiatry multidisciplinary team, supporting complex decision-making and risk management
- Acting as Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act
- Working closely with emergency, medical, and surgical teams to deliver integrated, patient-centred care
- Contributing to the development and refinement of liaison psychiatry pathways, including delivery against CORE24 standards
- Supporting quality improvement initiatives, audit activity, and service evaluation
- Supervising, appraising, and mentoring junior medical staff and trainees
- Contributing to teaching, training, and the Trust’s academic and CPD programmes
- Participating in the second on-call rota (approximately 1 in 10)
- You will also play an active role in service planning, governance, and the ongoing evolution of liaison psychiatry within the Trust.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
- CCT in General Adult Psychiatry, or within 12 months of CCT at time of interview
- Eligible for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register
- Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act
Essential Experience
- Substantial experience in General Adult Psychiatry
- Experience working with detained patients and acute mental health presentations
- Senior-level experience (as higher trainee or consultant) in inpatient or acute hospital settings
- Experience of clinical audit and an understanding of clinical governance principles
