Job Description
We are seeking a Consultant in General Adult Liaison Psychiatry to provide senior clinical leadership within our established liaison service at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.
This role offers a unique opportunity to work with complex adult patients presenting across the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit, and inpatient wards, providing expert assessments, clinical oversight, and leadership within a multidisciplinary team (MDT).
You will also act as Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, contributing to risk management, pathway development, and quality improvement while meeting CORE24 standards.
What You Will Do
Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver timely, high-quality assessment and management of adults with complex mental health needs.
- Support MDT decision-making and supervise junior medical staff.
- Act as Responsible Clinician under the Mental Health Act for detained patients.
- Ensure adherence to professional and clinical governance standards.
Leadership & Service Development
- Participate in service planning, pathway redesign, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to teaching, supervision, and mentoring of trainees.
- Support the Trust’s academic programme through lectures, seminars, and internal CPD.
- Lead risk management and ensure safe patient care within acute hospital settings.
Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical records.
- Participate in annual job plan reviews to reflect evolving service needs.
- Comply with Trust policies, procedures, standing orders, and financial instructions.
- On-Call Commitment
- Approximately 1:10 as second senior on-call, providing expert oversight during out-of-hours periods.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Full registration with the General Medical Council
- MRCPsych or equivalent recognised qualification
- CCT (or within 12 months of CCT) in General Adult Psychiatry
- Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
Experience
- Experience in general adult psychiatry and working with detained inpatients
- Experience in audit and clinical governance principles
- Proven ability to supervise, mentor, and lead junior medical staff
