Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Older People’s Community Mental Health Team in Whitby as a Community Mental Health Support Worker. This role is ideal for someone who is compassionate, practical, and motivated to support older adults and their families to live safely and well within their own homes and care settings.

You’ll work closely with a professional, caring multidisciplinary team, supporting individuals across the community and within local residential and nursing homes. While you’ll often work independently, you’ll receive regular supervision, support, and opportunities for development throughout your role.

Due to the wide geographical area covered, you’ll need to be able to travel independently and have access to suitable transport.

Your Role

As a Community Mental Health Support Worker, you’ll provide practical, therapeutic, and emotional support to older adults under the supervision of a Registered Mental Health Nurse.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering safe, person-centred care in community settings
  • Monitoring mental and physical health, escalating concerns appropriately
  • Supporting non-pharmacological interventions on an individual and group basis
  • Helping people work towards agreed goals that promote independence and wellbeing
  • Supporting individuals in care and residential homes, strengthening joint working with partner services
  • Carrying out physical health monitoring, particularly during medication changes
  • Supporting early identification of physical or mental health deterioration
  • Undertaking ECG and venepuncture when required (training provided)

Working Day to Day

You’ll work alongside Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and wider MDT colleagues, contributing to coordinated, high-quality care. You’ll also:

  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance reviews
  • Attend training and development sessions
  • Promote equality, dignity, privacy, and respect at all times
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, abuse, or neglect
  • Work closely with voluntary and statutory organisations, including social care

What We’re Looking For

Essential Qualifications

  • Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2 (or equivalent)
  • Care Certificate
  • Literacy and Numeracy at Level 2 (or equivalent)
  • Willingness to complete the Trust’s full Healthcare Assistant competency framework within the first 6 months

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Previous experience as a Band 2 or 3 Healthcare Assistant (or equivalent)
  • Ability to communicate effectively, sensitively, and clearly
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload
  • Ability to work independently while remaining part of a wider team
  • Understanding of patient safety, confidentiality, and safeguarding

Desirable

  • Experience supporting people with mental health needs or learning disabilities
  • Competence in ECG and venepuncture (or willingness to train)
