Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced, motivated Sonographer to join our friendly, multidisciplinary ultrasound team. We welcome applications from General Medical Sonographers, Obstetric Sonographers, or those with dual competence who want to work in a service known for quality, collaboration, and professional respect.
About the service
Our purpose-built Diagnostic Ultrasound Department is equipped with flagship GE systems and supported by:
- A well-established Sonographer training programme running successfully for over 10 years
- Seven-day Radiologist support, with an approachable and educational culture
- Dedicated Interventional Ultrasound facilities
You’ll also work closely with our refurbished Antenatal Clinic, which supports approximately 3,500 women annually. The unit features state-of-the-art Canon and GE equipment across a four-bed suite and delivers truly integrated care led by Sonographers, Midwives, Nurses, and Radiographers.
Your role
Depending on your background and interests, your responsibilities will include:
Obstetric Ultrasound
- Performing the full range of obstetric examinations, including Nuchal Translucency scans
- Working alongside Obstetric teams, the Antenatal Screening team, and Fetal Medicine Centre
- Contributing to delivery of the Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme (FASP) and meeting all required KPI
General Medical Ultrasound
- Delivering a broad portfolio of examinations including abdominal and gynaecological ultrasound
- Collaborating closely with Radiologists who actively support development and learning
- Providing high-quality reports with clear clinical recommendations
Across both areas, you will:
- Perform and independently report examinations to Band 7 standards
- Work within professional, departmental, and national clinical guidelines
- Take accountability for your own clinical practice
- Communicate clearly and compassionately, including in sensitive or distressing situations
- All practice aligns with NHS imaging standards and professional expectations
Who we’re looking for
You will be:
- A qualified Sonographer with recent NHS experience
- Passionate about patient-centred care and service improvement
- Adaptable, flexible, and keen to be part of a supportive team culture
Essential qualifications
- PG Certificate or PG Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (CASE accredited)
- Current UK professional registration
- Desirable (but not essential)
- Experience in small parts or paediatric ultrasound
- Familiarity with Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for community site work
- Training and development will be provided where needed for the right candidate.

- £47,810 to £54,710 per annum
- Permanent, full-time post
