About the Opportunity

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to offer a newly created Specialty Doctor post within the Community Older Persons’ Mental Health (OPMH) service in Portsmouth. This 8 PA role provides an excellent opportunity to play a senior clinical role within a well-established, multidisciplinary community service, while working closely with experienced Consultant Psychiatrists.

This post is ideal for a psychiatrist who enjoys autonomous clinical work, values collaborative team practice, and wants the opportunity to influence service development while delivering high-quality, person-centred care for older adults.

Your Role in the Service

As a Specialty Doctor in Community OPMH, you will provide senior clinical leadership across community settings, ensuring continuity, safety, and quality of care for older people with mental health needs.

Your work will span outpatient, home-based, and multidisciplinary environments, with a strong emphasis on recovery-focused and holistic care.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Undertake independent psychiatric assessments within the community
  • Run outpatient clinics and conduct home visits
  • Manage a defined caseload of complex patients
  • Develop and review treatment plans, including risk and safeguarding considerations
  • Supervise junior doctors and senior nursing staff
  • Chair and contribute to MDTs, CPA reviews, and Best Interest meetings
  • Support seamless working between community and inpatient teams
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Maintain clear, accurate, and timely clinical documentation
  • All practice is delivered in line with national mental health legislation and NHS clinical governance standards

Out-of-Hours Work

As the service continues to evolve, there may be future opportunities to contribute to the out-of-hours rota. While this is not currently included in the job plan, applicants who are willing and able to participate are strongly encouraged to apply.

About You

You’ll be a collaborative and resilient clinician with sound judgement and a commitment to high-quality care for older people.

Essential Requirements

  • Full GMC registration
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

For Specialty Doctor grade:

  • Minimum of 4 years postgraduate medical training, with at least 2 years in psychiatry (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong experience of multidisciplinary working
  • Commitment to recovery-focused, patient-centred practice

Desirable

  • MRCPsych
  • Section 12 approval (or willingness to work towards this)
  • Interest in service development and leadership

This post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975
