About the Role

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is looking for motivated and enthusiastic Registered Nurses to join our Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory team. This role is ideal for nurses with recent acute-care experience, as well as those seeking a fresh clinical challenge within a highly specialised and fast-paced cardiac environment.

You will work alongside experienced Band 6 and Band 7 nurses, consultants, cardiac physiologists, and radiographers, contributing to a 24/7 Primary PCI service, complex structural heart procedures, and advanced electrophysiology work. The role includes on-call participation as part of the primary PCI rota.

The Cardiac Cath Lab is a technically advanced and dynamic setting caring for patients with high-acuity, time-critical cardiac conditions. The work is physically demanding, requiring long periods standing in lead protection, and requires excellent teamwork, adaptability, and focus.

You will be supported with structured training and ongoing development, with opportunities to build advanced skills, contribute to evidence-based practice, and engage in clinical research activity within the nursing team.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice in the Cath Lab

Act as a scrub nurse for a wide range of cardiac procedures, including:

  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)
  • Pacemaker and device implantation
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)
  • Electrophysiology studies and ablations
  • Perform the circulating nurse role, including:
  • Documentation and safety checks
  • Administration of IV medications
  • Patient monitoring during procedures
  • Use of emergency equipment including defibrillation

Patient Care & Journey Support

  • Prepare patients for procedures, including cannulation and medication administration
  • Escort patients from wards or the Cardiac Day Case Unit to the Cath Lab
  • Provide post-procedure monitoring when required
  • Deliver safe, effective handovers when returning patients to wards
  • Offer reassurance and clear communication throughout the patient’s Cath Lab journey

Teamwork & Departmental Contribution

  • Maintain a clean, stocked, and safe lab environment
  • Contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the Cath Labs
  • Support audit, research, and practice development initiatives
  • Participate in training and competency development

Training & Development

Full Cath Lab training is provided, including:

  • Scrub techniques and procedural preparation
  • Equipment handling and procedural assistance
  • Cardiac pharmacology and IV medication management
  • Further academic study and professional development are actively encouraged and supported.
