Job Description

About the Role

The University of Reading is seeking a Senior Technician in Crop Science to join its Technical Services team, supporting both teaching and research at the University’s farm at Sonning. This is a hands-on, practical role at the heart of agricultural innovation, offering the opportunity to contribute directly to research addressing some of the most pressing global challenges of our time.

Working within the Crops Research Unit (CRU), you will support field- and lab-based research focused on sustainable agriculture, food security, climate resilience, and biodiversity. The farm spans 180 hectares, including more than 15 hectares dedicated to experimental crop trials and protected cropping systems.

Why This Role Matters

Modern crop science plays a critical role in delivering sustainable food systems and meeting national and global policy goals, including the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The work you support will contribute to evidence and innovation aligned with UK public priorities on agriculture and the environment, including those led by:

Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) – sustainable farming and food systems

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) – agri-food and environmental research

Natural England – biodiversity and land management

What You Will Be Doing

Working closely with the Technical Manager, you will play a key role in the smooth day-to-day operation of crop science research and teaching activities. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out mechanised field operations, such as cultivation, planting, crop treatments, plant protection product application, and harvesting
  • Maintaining and operating agricultural and research machinery, including workshop-based repair, construction, and servicing
  • Supporting the planning, management, and agronomy of field and plot-scale crop trials
  • Undertaking laboratory analysis of crop, soil, and plant samples
  • Assisting with the general maintenance of trial sites and facilities
  • Providing practical support to students, researchers, and academic staff during teaching and research activities

You may occasionally assist other technical teams across the University’s farms and crop research facilities. Full training will be provided for specialist equipment, systems, and certification where required.

About You

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical, outdoor work combined with scientific research support and continuous learning.

You will bring:

  • Qualifications equivalent to HNC, NVQ Level 3, AS/A-Level in Agricultural Science, crop production, or mechanical/workshop-related subjects
(or a relevant degree with limited practical experience)
  • A basic understanding of crop production, with a strong willingness to develop further
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience in a workshop or machinery-based environment
  • Practical capability in tractor driving or agricultural operations
  • Enthusiasm for professional training, including plant protection certification (PA1/PA2)
  • Experience or aptitude in handling plants, seeds, soils, or crop samples
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records
