About the Role
Quaternary Scientific is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to take a leading role in the delivery of archaeological science research projects. This permanent position offers the opportunity to manage a varied portfolio of academic and commercially funded work, contributing to both research excellence and sustainable project delivery within the Quaternary Science team.
The post is well suited to a specialist who combines technical expertise in environmental archaeology with strong organisational and collaborative skills.
What You Will Be Doing
In this role, you will provide strategic and hands-on leadership across multiple archaeological science projects. Your work will span planning, delivery, and reporting, ensuring projects meet professional, regulatory, and commercial standards.
Key aspects of the role include:
- Managing archaeological science projects from initiation through to completion, ensuring quality, timeliness, and financial performance.
- Applying specialist knowledge in archaeobotanical analysis—such as pollen, plant macrofossils, or phytoliths—to support research outcomes.
- Overseeing fieldwork programmes, laboratory analyses, and the production of technical and specialist reports.
- Working closely with clients, consultants, and regulatory authorities to provide expert advice and ensure compliance with planning and environmental guidance.
- Contributing to peer-reviewed publications and wider knowledge exchange activities.
- Supervising technical staff and supporting the effective operation of geoarchaeology and palaeoenvironmental laboratories.
- Supporting teaching activities and student placements where appropriate.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications
To be successful, you will demonstrate:
- Specialist expertise in at least one area of archaeobotanical analysis.
- A postgraduate qualification (MSc or equivalent) in Quaternary science, environmental archaeology, geoarchaeology, or a closely related discipline.
- Extensive experience interpreting complex datasets and producing high-quality technical reports.
- Proven project management capability, including coordinating people, resources, and deadlines.
- Experience building effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
- Practical competence in archaeological fieldwork, particularly borehole investigations.
- A flexible and proactive approach, with a willingness to develop new skills through training and professional development.
- Knowledge of geoarchaeological processes and deposit modelling would be an advantage.
