The Opportunity

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is inviting applications from experienced General Practitioners for appointment at Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice level. This is a senior academic role for a clinician who is passionate about advancing primary care through research, education, and leadership, while maintaining active clinical practice.

You will join the Department of Primary Care & Public Health, contributing to a vibrant academic environment with strong links to NHS partners and regional research networks. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of general practice education and research, both locally and nationally.

Your Academic and Clinical Contribution

As a senior clinical academic, you will:

Develop and lead an independent, high-quality research programme within general practice or primary care.

Strengthen BSMS’s research profile in areas such as:

  • global health and infectious disease
  • cancer care
  • mental health
  • health inequalities
  • population health and prevention
  • coastal and underserved communities

Contribute to research leadership within the School and support research engagement among GP colleagues across the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Kent, Surrey & Sussex

You will also play a central role in delivering and shaping undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, ensuring that students experience general practice as an intellectually rigorous, rewarding, and impactful career.

Teaching and Educational Leadership

You will take a leadership role in general practice teaching across the BMBS curriculum, including:

  • Enhancing undergraduate GP placements and Student Selected Components
  • Supporting fourth-year Individual Research Projects
  • Encouraging wider GP engagement in teaching beyond BSMS
  • Championing student-led initiatives and career development in general practice

At Professorial level, you will be expected to demonstrate sustained national and international academic leadership, alongside formal leadership responsibilities within the School.

Clinical Practice Requirement

The postholder will hold a 0.2 FTE role within a local GP practice, supported by an appropriate honorary NHS contract. Clinical work will align with NHS England requirements and standards for primary care delivery.
