The Team and Environment

Within Estates Services, the Compliance Team ensures that over 300 academic, residential, and historic buildings across the University’s estate are safe, robust, and compliant with statutory requirements. Working collaboratively with colleagues from Building Services, Facilities Management, Sustainability, and Space Management, the team operationalises safety, sustainability, and regulatory resilience across all properties.

Role Overview

As a Compliance Surveyor, you will be responsible for driving key compliance programmes that protect the University’s people and buildings. You will lead projects related to fire safety, asbestos control, environmental compliance, and general health and safety standards across a varied estate including heritage structures, modern facilities, and specialist research buildings.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering and coordinating compliance-related projects such as fire system upgrades, asbestos surveys and remediation plans, and building safety audits.
  • Applying your expertise in building regulations to ensure compliance with UK statutory requirements, including the Building Safety Act 2022 and CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Working with contractors and internal stakeholders to resolve complex building challenges effectively and safely.
  • Overseeing reactive repairs and improvements to structural fabric in large-scale commercial or institutional buildings.
  • Communicating technical information clearly to stakeholders at all levels and maintaining detailed project records.

Who We’re Looking For

You will be a proactive and experienced construction professional with a strong track record of delivering compliance-focused building solutions in complex environments.

Essential criteria include:

  • Chartered status with a recognised body such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
  • Extensive experience in project delivery and contractor engagement.
  • Strong technical understanding of active and passive fire protection, and proven experience applying fire safety principles in the built environment.

Deep familiarity with key legislation and statutory frameworks, including:

  • Building Regulations 2010 (England) – statutory standards for design and construction of buildings
  • Building Safety Act 2022 – new regime for higher-risk buildings
  • CDM Regulations 2015 – health and safety duties for construction projects
  • Fire Safety Order 2005 – duties on responsible persons for fire risk assessments 
  • Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 – requirements for managing asbestos in buildings
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage deadlines and competing priorities effectively.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
