About the Role
We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH) to join our established inpatient service at Gosport War Memorial Hospital. This role offers an opportunity to provide high-quality consultant-level care while playing a central role in clinical leadership across inpatient wards.
You will hold Responsible Clinician (RC) responsibility for patients on Rose Ward and contribute consultant expertise across other inpatient areas as required. Working alongside a part-time consultant, three resident doctors, and a middle-grade doctor, you will be an integral part of a collaborative and supportive multidisciplinary team.
This role suits a consultant who values clinical excellence, team leadership, and service development within an inpatient older adult mental health setting.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Leadership
- Deliver expert psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for older adults admitted to inpatient wards
- Act as Responsible Clinician, ensuring safe, lawful, and person-centred care in line with the Mental Health Act 1983
- Provide senior clinical leadership across wards, supporting medical and multidisciplinary colleagues
- Ensure continuity of care and high clinical standards across inpatient services
Team Working & Communication
- Work closely with senior clinicians to clarify roles, responsibilities, and accountability within the care team
- Promote a culture of openness, mutual respect, and shared decision-making
- Ensure effective communication within and beyond the team, particularly during transitions of care
- Encourage inclusive team discussions and ensure that clinical decisions are well understood and implemented
Governance, Teaching & Development
- Actively participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
- Contribute to service planning and future development of OPMH inpatient services
- Support teaching, supervision, and professional development of junior medical staff
- Engage with academic meetings, training activities, and continuous professional development

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- MRCPsych or recognised equivalent qualification
- CCT in Older Persons Psychiatry, or eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 12 months
- Approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
Professional Requirements
- Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register
- Demonstrated experience in inpatient older adult mental health services
- Ability to provide clinical leadership and RC responsibilities
