About the role

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Mental Health to provide clinical leadership within the Treatment & Intervention (T&I) Service, with additional input into the Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Team.

Based at Parkside Community Mental Health Centre, this role offers an opportunity to work with individuals experiencing severe, enduring, or complex mental health conditions, delivering high-quality, recovery-focused care within a multidisciplinary community setting.

You will play a central leadership role, supporting both clinical decision-making and service development, while working closely with experienced colleagues across psychiatry, nursing, psychology, and allied professions.

Your clinical focus

In this post, you will:

  • Provide senior medical leadership to the Community Treatment & Intervention and EIP teams
  • Undertake new patient assessments, diagnostic reviews, and formulation-based care planning
  • Review and manage complex, unstable, and high-risk presentations, often jointly with MDT colleagues
  • Actively contribute to personalised care planning, ensuring patient and carer involvement
  • Serve as Responsible Clinician for patients subject to Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) and Ministry of Justice restrictions
  • Fulfil duties under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act, including community MHA assessments and occasional Section 136 work
  • Provide expert consultation to colleagues and support shared clinical decision-making

Leadership, supervision, and teamwork

You will be supported by a Specialty Doctor and a Foundation Doctor and will be expected to provide regular supervision to them. In addition, the role includes supervision of non-medical prescribers, including nurse prescribers within the teams.

You will:

  • Attend and actively participate in daily Huddles, weekly Supercell meetings, and MDT reviews
  • Support clinical staff alongside the Team Manager, Advanced Practitioners, and Psychologists
  • Contribute to formulation meetings and structured care-plan reviews
  • Promote reflective practice, quality improvement, and safe clinical standards

The teams benefit from access to Trust-wide specialist services, including tertiary treatment pathways, ADHD, autism assessment, perinatal mental health, and eating disorder services.

  • On-call commitment
  • On-call frequency: approximately 1:18
  • Rota covers Adult Mental Health and Older People’s services across Teesside
  • Includes Crisis Assessment Suite (CAS), acute hospitals, community MHA work, police stations, and crisis teams

Person profile (summary)

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • Strong expertise in Adult Mental Health psychiatry
  • Ability to manage complexity, risk, and uncertainty using a bio-psycho-social approach
  • Demonstrated leadership within multidisciplinary teams
  • Commitment to teaching, supervision, and continuous professional development

Desirable

  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Approved Clinician and Section 12 status (or ability to achieve shortly after appointment)
  • Experience in service development, research, audit, or quality improvement
  • Governance, checks, and sponsorship
  • Appointment subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
