The Role

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to provide clinical leadership within the Community Treatment & Intervention Team and the Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Team, based at Parkside Community Mental Health Centre in Middlesbrough.

This role offers the opportunity to work at the heart of community mental health services, supporting individuals living with severe, enduring, and complex mental health conditions. You will work closely with a skilled multidisciplinary team to deliver responsive, recovery-focused, and evidence-based care.

The post combines direct clinical work, leadership, supervision, and service development, making it ideal for a consultant who values teamwork, innovation, and high-quality patient care.

What You’ll Be Doing

As Consultant Psychiatrist, you will:

  • Provide clinical leadership to the Community Treatment & Intervention and EIP teams
  • Offer specialist psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning
  • Undertake joint reviews for complex, unstable, and high-risk patients
  • Actively contribute to personalised care planning and formulation meetings
  • Serve as Responsible Clinician for patients on Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) and Ministry of Justice (MoJ) restrictions
  • Carry out Mental Health Act assessments in the community and occasional Section 136 assessments
  • Attend and contribute to daily Huddles, weekly Supercell meetings, and wider MDT forums

Provide clinical supervision to:

  • Specialty and Foundation doctors
  • Nurse prescribers and non-medical prescribers
  • Work collaboratively with psychology, advanced practitioners, and team managers

Specialist Support and Collaboration

  • The team benefits from access to a wide range of Trust-wide specialist services, including:
  • Tertiary Treatment & Intervention services
  • ADHD services
  • Autism Spectrum Assessment Team

Perinatal Mental Health Team

  • Eating Disorders services
  • This ensures patients receive coordinated and holistic care, even where needs are highly complex.
  • On-Call Responsibilities
  • Frequency: 1 in 18 rota
  • Covers adult mental health and older people’s services across Teesside

Includes:

  • Crisis Assessment Suite (CAS) at Roseberry Park Hospital
  • Acute hospitals (North Tees and James Cook University Hospital)
  • Community MHA assessments, police stations, and crisis teams

Person Specification (Summary)

Essential Qualifications

  • MBBS (or equivalent medical qualification)
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • Approved Clinician status and Section 12 approval
    (or ability to achieve within 3 months)

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Strong expertise within your psychiatric specialty
  • Excellent bio-psycho-social clinical skills
  • Ability to manage complex clinical presentations and uncertainty
  • Confident decision-making grounded in evidence and multidisciplinary input
  • Experience of teaching, supervision, audit, and service evaluation
  • Ability to meet duties under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act

Desirable

  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Experience across a range of specialist or sub-specialist services
  • Qualifications in medical education, research, or leadership
  • Evidence of leadership beyond the MDT
  • Education, Leadership and Development

You will be supported to:

  • Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Engage in continuing professional development (CPD)
  • Lead or contribute to quality improvement initiatives
  • Participate in clinical research or service innovation
