Lead the Next Chapter of a World-Class University Estate

The University of Reading is seeking an experienced and visionary Campus Development Director to lead the strategic development of its exceptional campus estate.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Estates, you will provide senior leadership for the Campus Development Department and take responsibility for the University’s major capital, infrastructure, and development programmes.

You will:

  • Lead and inspire a multi-disciplinary in-house team, from senior managers to operational professionals
  • Translate institutional strategy into a coherent, deliverable campus development portfolio
  • Oversee major construction and infrastructure projects, ensuring delivery to time, cost, quality, and safety standards
  • Provide strong governance, financial oversight, and risk management across programmes
  • Embed sustainability and decarbonisation principles into all stages of planning and delivery
  • Build trusted relationships with internal stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and external partners

What You Will Bring

You will be a senior leader with a proven track record of success in complex, multi-stakeholder environments. You are likely to offer:

  • Extensive experience leading large-scale capital projects and programmes
  • Strong strategic, commercial, and financial management capability
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • A relevant degree and UK professional qualification (e.g. RICS, CIOB, RIBA)
  • In-depth knowledge of construction, procurement, and project management best practice

Desirable experience includes:

  • Postgraduate qualifications (e.g. MSc or MBA)
  • Programme or project management accreditation
  • Experience applying sustainability frameworks such as BREEAM
