About the Opportunity
Henley Business School is inviting applications for an AI Software Engineer to join an exciting, nationally funded health innovation project. This role sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, software engineering, and clinical decision support, contributing directly to improved patient outcomes in the NHS.
You will work on RMD-Health, a machine learning–enabled decision support system designed to enhance the early identification and referral of patients with suspected rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). The project is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) under the Invention for Innovation Product Development Award (NIHR206473).
Your Role and Impact
As AI Software Engineer, you will take technical ownership of the system prototype, working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team that includes AI researchers, clinicians, NHS IT professionals, and patient representatives.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading the architecture, development, testing, and optimisation of the RMD-Health software prototype
- Designing and integrating agentic AI components to support autonomous data ingestion, quality checks, and AI-driven decision support
- Ensuring interoperability with NHS Electronic Health Record systems, using standards such as FHIR
- Embedding compliance with Digital Technology Assessment Criteria (DTAC) and ISO 13485 requirements
- Collaborating closely with Machine Learning Engineers to integrate models, decision logic, and explainable AI features
- Building and maintaining secure data pipelines for anonymised NHS patient and referral data, in line with GDPR and NHS Information Governance standards
- Engaging with clinicians, patients, and technical stakeholders through workshops, interviews, and pilot deployments
- Supporting technical documentation for UKCA / CE marking of AI as a Medical Device (AIaMD)
- Contributing to academic publications, dissemination activities, and project presentations
- Delivering high-quality outputs to agreed timelines within a collaborative research environment
