About the Role

An exciting leadership opportunity has arisen within the Neurosciences Directorate at Cambridge University Hospitals. We are looking for a highly organised, analytical, and people-focused Directorate Support Manager to lead administrative services across Neurosurgery, Paediatric Neurosurgery, and Rehabilitation.

In this pivotal role, you will manage and develop a large administrative workforce while acting as a key link between clinicians, operational teams, and patients. Your leadership will directly support the delivery of safe, timely, and effective patient care by ensuring that national NHS access targets and patient pathway standards are consistently met.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced manager who is keen to further develop their operational management, service improvement, and leadership skills within a complex and high-performing clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Provide clear leadership and day-to-day management of administrative teams across neurosurgery and rehabilitation services
  • Support, coach, and develop staff to maintain high performance and morale
  • Act as the primary point of contact between clinicians, managers, administrative teams, and patients
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement

Patient Pathway & Performance Management

  • Oversee patient pathways to ensure compliance with national NHS targets, including Referral to Treatment (RTT) standards
  • Monitor performance against key metrics and take proactive action to address risks or delays
  • Ensure administrative processes support safe, efficient, and patient-centred care

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Analyse and interpret complex datasets from multiple sources to identify trends, risks, and performance gaps
  • Produce accurate reports and dashboards for internal and Trust-level forums
  • Present performance information clearly to a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leaders

Service Development & Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve administrative processes and patient tracking systems
  • Support service redesign projects and implementation of new ways of working
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams on service development initiatives

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree-level education or equivalent relevant experience

Desirable Qualifications

  • Recognised management qualification

Essential Experience

  • Significant management experience within a customer-facing environment
  • Line management experience in a patient-facing service
  • Experience analysing numerical and statistical data
  • Producing reports and presentations for senior stakeholders

Desirable Experience

  • Demonstrable service improvement experience
  • Experience using systems such as Epic, CHEQS, or similar NHS information platforms
  • Experience working with NHS-wide data

Knowledge

Essential

  • Strong ability to work with large, complex datasets
  • Advanced IT skills, particularly in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • In-depth understanding of NHS access policies and RTT targets
  • Knowledge of patient pathways, tracking lists, and data quality requirements
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and GDPR
