About the Role

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications from practising General Practitioners for appointment at Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice level. This appointment will strengthen the Department of Primary Care & Public Health and contribute to BSMS’s growing national and international research profile.

These are senior clinical academic roles requiring leadership across research, education, and academic service. The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping teaching strategy, advancing research excellence, and supporting the School’s long-term academic and clinical ambitions.

The postholder will hold an ongoing clinical commitment of 0.2 FTE within a local GP practice and an appropriate honorary NHS contract.

Key Responsibilities

Research Leadership

  • Lead and develop an independent, externally funded research programme
  • Contribute to departmental and School-wide research strategy and leadership
  • Collaborate with colleagues across NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Kent, Surrey & Sussex
  • Support and enable research engagement in primary care settings

Teaching and Education

  • Provide leadership in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in general practice
  • Enhance the visibility and quality of general practice teaching across the BMBS curriculum
  • Support student-led GP initiatives, placements, and career development
  • Engage GP colleagues beyond BSMS to contribute to placements, SSCs, and research projects

Academic Leadership (Professorial Appointments)

  • Demonstrate sustained national and international impact in research, education, and innovation
  • Undertake formal leadership roles at School level aligned with experience and portfolio
  • Contribute to institutional strategy, governance, and academic planning

About You

You will be a practising GP with an established academic profile appropriate to Associate Professor or Professor level. You will bring a strong commitment to research-led teaching and collaborative leadership.
