Job Description
We’re excited to welcome passionate and experienced neonatal nurses to our vibrant team at the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU), part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Located at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, this is a fantastic opportunity if you’re already working at Band 6 and seeking fresh challenges, or if you’re a Band 5 nurse with specialist neonatal qualifications ready to step up in your career.
What We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate will hold a recognised neonatal qualification in speciality (such as the Neonatal Pathway or equivalent to the former ENB 405). You’ll bring strong leadership abilities, excellent communication skills, and a proven track record of collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver outstanding care.
Exciting Opportunities
In this role, you’ll have the chance to develop your expertise further, including potential involvement in our neonatal transport service and participation in various special interest groups that drive innovation and best practice in neonatal care.
Key Responsibilities
As a senior neonatal nurse, you’ll play a vital role in providing compassionate, high-quality care to newborns and their families across intensive care, high dependency, and special care environments. This includes:
- Leading shifts when needed, motivating and deploying the nursing team based on skills, experience, and available resources.
- Working closely with the multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, and implement individualised care plans for each baby.
- Acting as a strong advocate for babies and parents, empowering families to make informed decisions (for example, around feeding choices, screening programmes, or other treatments) while respecting their privacy, dignity, cultural, and spiritual needs.
- Serving as a role model by demonstrating expert clinical practice, including safe administration of intravenous medications, supervision of junior staff, and proficient use of advanced equipment like ventilators and blood gas analysers.
- Contributing to effective time management, environmental adaptations to support developmental care (such as minimal handling for very premature babies), and seamless discharge planning that involves parents and partners like health visitors or therapists.
- Making sound clinical decisions, interpreting results (e.g., blood gases or investigations), and referring to specialists when appropriate.
- Supporting ongoing professional growth through mentorship, participating in development activities, and helping colleagues advance their skills.
Flexibility is key, as you’ll work across our neonatal sites when required to ensure consistent service delivery.
Visa Sponsorship
This position may be eligible for sponsorship under the UK Skilled Worker visa route. However, sponsorship is subject to meeting UK Visas and Immigration requirements, including relevant skill levels, salary thresholds, and any specific criteria for the role.
