About the Role
The University of Reading is seeking a Teaching and Research Technician to support laboratory-based practical teaching within the School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science (SAGES). This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a background in chemistry, environmental science, physical geography, earth science, or archaeology to contribute directly to high-quality teaching and research.
You will be part of a small, highly skilled technical team supporting analytical laboratories used by undergraduate and postgraduate students. The University of Reading is currently ranked No. 1 in the UK for Archaeology research quality (REF 2021) and is internationally recognised for excellence in Earth Systems and Environmental Science.
Working Environment
You will work in well-equipped analytical laboratories supporting teaching and student research focused on global challenges such as:
- Climate change and environmental monitoring
- Natural hazards and earth processes
- Human-environment interactions through time
Laboratory facilities include advanced analytical instruments such as ICP-OES, Gas Chromatography, MP-AES, Elemental Analysers, Spectrophotometers, and Ion Chromatography.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Maintain and prepare a large teaching laboratory for undergraduate and postgraduate practical classes
- Set up, dismantle, and demonstrate equipment for teaching sessions
- Maintain portable field-testing equipment used during field classes
- Provide laboratory support for student project and dissertation work
- Order consumables, chemicals, and laboratory supplies
- Process samples including soil, water, plants, seeds, and microbial cultures for teaching use
From time to time, you may assist other technical teams delivering teaching practicals across the University. Full training will be provided for specialist techniques and equipment where required.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
You should have:
An HNC / NVQ Level 3 / AS- or A-Level qualification in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, or a related discipline
Or a relevant degree with more limited hands-on laboratory experience
Experience working in laboratory environments, ideally supporting teaching, research, or commercial activities
A methodical approach, good organisational skills, and attention to detail
Confidence working with staff and students in a teaching-focused environment
