About the Opportunity
The University of Sussex is seeking an experienced and proactive Event Manager (Civic Engagement) to join our Communications, Engagement and Advancement (CEA) Division on a fixed-term basis.
This role plays a key part in delivering a diverse portfolio of events that strengthen our civic presence and global relationships. Working within a collaborative team of events professionals, you will oversee the planning, delivery, and evaluation of high-profile activities including alumni reunions, international alumni receptions, graduation ceremonies (UK and overseas), and major institutional projects.
You will take the lead on shaping and delivering the University’s global and civic events programme, developing a defined number of high-quality, purposeful events that align with institutional priorities and community engagement goals.
In addition, you will have line management responsibility for an Events Coordinator (Grade 4), supporting their development and ensuring consistent delivery standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and deliver civic and global engagement events from concept through to evaluation
- Lead assigned projects while contributing to larger, cross-functional event programmes
- Manage event budgets, timelines, suppliers, and risk assessments
- Monitor event performance and continuously improve delivery through evaluation
- Line manage and support an Events Coordinator, ensuring effective workload planning
- Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders, alumni, partners, and external suppliers
- Ensure all events are compliant with UK health, safety, and employment regulations
About You
You will be a confident and capable events professional with at least five years’ experience delivering complex events in a fast-paced environment.
You are someone who can juggle multiple priorities without losing attention to detail, remain calm under pressure, and communicate clearly with colleagues at all levels. You are equally comfortable managing your own workload and stepping in to support others when required.
Strong organisational skills, sound judgement, and a collaborative mindset are essential for success in this role.
