The Department of Computer Science at UCL is internationally recognised for its leadership in research and education. It is one of the largest computer science departments in the UK, bringing together more than 170 academic and teaching staff across a broad range of specialisms. The department plays a central role in interdisciplinary research across engineering, data science, healthcare, security, and public policy.

Within this vibrant environment, we are seeking to appoint a permanent faculty member in Computer Systems and Networking at either Lecturer or Associate Professor level.

The Role

This appointment will strengthen our research and teaching activities in systems and networks, broadly defined. We welcome applicants whose work spans core systems and networking topics, as well as those whose research connects to emerging challenges such as large-scale distributed systems, cloud and edge computing, networked systems security, data-intensive infrastructures, and performance-aware system design.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, develop an independent and internationally visible research programme, and actively engage with the wider academic and professional communities.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Academic Leadership

  • Deliver and develop high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in computer systems and networking.
  • Contribute to curriculum design and programme development in line with departmental priorities.
  • Supervise undergraduate projects and postgraduate taught and research students (MSc, MPhil, PhD, EngD).
  • Support inclusive and innovative teaching practices.

Research and Scholarship

  • Conduct original, high-impact research in systems and networking.
  • Publish regularly in leading international journals and conferences.
  • Secure external research funding as principal or co-investigator.
  • Build collaborations within UCL and with external academic, industrial, and public-sector partners.

Service and Engagement

  • Contribute to departmental administration and academic citizenship.
  • Participate in peer review, conference organisation, and professional service.
  • Engage with the wider research, policy, and industry communities where relevant.

About You

Applicants should demonstrate the following:

  • A PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong expertise in computer systems and networking, supported by a clear research vision.
  • Evidence of high-quality research outputs appropriate to career stage.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Active engagement with the scholarly and/or professional community.

Appointment at Associate Professor level will additionally require evidence of research leadership, funding success, and growing international recognition.
