About the Opportunity
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced and forward-thinking Advanced Clinical Pharmacist to lead and develop pharmaceutical care within Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery.
As a regional referral centre and one of the largest HPB services in the UK, CUH provides highly specialised surgical care for patients with complex liver, pancreatic, and biliary conditions. This newly developed role offers the chance to shape a specialist pharmacy service, working at the forefront of surgical innovation and multidisciplinary care.

Your Role in the Service
Based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, you will act as the lead pharmacist for HPB surgery, delivering expert pharmaceutical input across inpatient and outpatient pathways. You will work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and allied health professionals as a core member of the HPB multidisciplinary team (MDT).
This role combines advanced clinical practice with leadership, education, and governance responsibilities, and is supported by the Lead Pharmacist for Surgery.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced Clinical Practice
You will:
- Lead the delivery of specialist pharmacy services for HPB surgical patients
- Optimise medicines use throughout the peri-operative pathway
- Use independent prescribing skills (where qualified) to improve patient outcomes
- Champion antimicrobial stewardship in complex surgical cases
- Support safe prescribing practices and medication governance within HPB services
- Contribute expert pharmaceutical advice in MDT meetings and clinical decision-making
Leadership & Service Development
You will:
- Represent pharmacy at HPB governance forums
- Lead service improvement and change management initiatives
- Develop and review local medicines guidelines, policies, and pathways
- Manage high-cost and high-risk medicines effectively
- Support audit, quality improvement, and research activity
Education & Workforce Development
You will:
- Deliver training to pharmacy staff, medical trainees, and the wider MDT
- Act as a mentor, tutor, and role model for junior pharmacists
- Design and deliver educational materials across multiple professional groups

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Pharmacy
- Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical or General Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent)
- Train-the-Trainer qualification (or equivalent)
Desirable Qualifications
- MSc in Clinical Pharmacy
- Independent Prescriber registration
- Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
- Faculty membership (or working towards) at Advanced Stage II
- Teaching, education, or management qualification
Essential Experience & Knowledge
You will demonstrate:
- Significant post-registration hospital pharmacy experience
- Advanced clinical practice at Band 7 or 8a level
- Experience across multiple specialties, including surgery
- Proven leadership in service development and change management
- Strong experience in antimicrobial stewardship and high-risk medicines
- Ability to write policies, reports, and clinical guidelines
- Advanced knowledge of NICE guidance, NHS systems, and medicines governance
- Confidence using electronic prescribing and pharmacy IT systems
