About This Opportunity
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting career development opportunity for two UK-registered nurses who wish to specialise in Occupational Health.
This trainee role is ideal for nurses with post-registration experience who are looking to transition into a specialist field. You will receive structured on-the-job training, professional supervision, and the opportunity to work towards recognised Occupational Health qualifications. On successful completion of training and competency assessments, you will progress to a Band 6 Occupational Health Nurse Adviser position.

This role may be eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, subject to meeting UK Visas & Immigration requirements, including the minimum salary threshold (£25,000) and role eligibility criteria.
What You Will Be Doing
As a Trainee Occupational Health Nurse Adviser, you will gradually develop the skills to deliver a wide range of occupational health services, including:
- Completing health clearance and pre-employment assessments in line with national guidance and local policies
- Providing professional advice on fitness for work to managers and staff
- Assessing and managing sharps injuries and blood or body fluid exposures
- Participating in health surveillance programmes
- Supporting and contributing to clinical audit activity
- Delivering workplace vaccination clinics at Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital
- As your confidence and competence grow, you will manage your own caseload and work with increasing autonomy.
Professional Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Act as an accountable practitioner, delivering specialist occupational health advice
- Assess fitness for work and recommend reasonable adjustments in line with the Equality Act 2010
- Identify when further medical information is required and request appropriate reports
- Maintain accurate electronic and written clinical records
- Produce clear, professional occupational health reports
- Undertake venepuncture and vaccination clinics as required
- Participate in health surveillance and service improvement initiatives

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Current UK NMC registration (Adult/General Nurse)
- Post-registration nursing experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Competent IT skills (Word, Excel, databases, Microsoft Teams)
- Demonstrated interest in Occupational Health as a nursing speciality
- Ability to produce clear, high-quality typed reports
- Evidence of learning or development related to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
- Strong organisational, planning, and time-management skills
Desirable Criteria
- Previous Occupational Health experience
- Experience working autonomously
- Competence in venepuncture
- Experience administering vaccinations
- Safeguarding and Pre-Employment Checks
- This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
