About the Opportunity
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is offering an excellent development opportunity for two UK-registered nurses who are keen to build a long-term career in Occupational Health (OH). This trainee role is designed for nurses with post-registration experience who want structured training, hands-on learning, and professional qualifications within a supportive NHS environment.
You will receive comprehensive workplace training while gradually developing the skills needed to practice independently as an Occupational Health Nurse Adviser. Upon successful completion of agreed competencies and training milestones, you will progress to a Band 6 role.
This position meets the eligibility criteria for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, subject to UK Visas & Immigration requirements, including skill level and minimum salary thresholds (£25,000).
Key Responsibilities
- With training and supervision, you will develop the confidence and competence to deliver a broad range of Occupational Health services, including:
- Conducting pre-employment and on-boarding health assessments in line with Department of Health guidance and Trust policies
- Providing professional, evidence-based advice on fitness for work to managers and staff
- Assessing and managing sharps injuries and exposure to blood and body fluids
- Participating in health surveillance programmes
- Delivering staff vaccination clinics across Worthing and St Richard’s Hospital sites
- Maintaining accurate clinical records and producing high-quality written OH reports
- Supporting and contributing to clinical audits and service improvement activities
- As your skills develop, you will increasingly manage your own caseload and work with a high level of professional autonomy.
Professional Accountability
In this role, you will:
- Act as an accountable practitioner, providing specialist occupational health advice
- Assess fitness for work while considering reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010
- Identify when further medical input is required and arrange appropriate referrals or reports
- Maintain confidentiality and high standards of record-keeping in line with NHS and legal requirements
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Current UK NMC registration (Adult/General Nurse)
- Post-qualification nursing experience
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, and Microsoft Teams
- Clear and genuine interest in Occupational Health as a nursing speciality
- Ability to produce accurate, professional clinical and management reports
- Evidence of personal learning or training related to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
- Good organisational, planning, and time-management skills
Desirable Criteria
- Previous Occupational Health experience
- Experience working independently or managing own caseload
- Venepuncture and vaccination administration skills
