About the Role

Quaternary Scientific is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Project Manager to join our Quaternary Science team. This pivotal role involves leading and managing a portfolio of archaeological science research projects, encompassing academic and developer-funded initiatives.

You will oversee project delivery from fieldwork to laboratory analysis and specialist reporting, ensuring high-quality outputs and income generation. This role offers the opportunity to supervise technical staff, manage geoarchaeology and palaeoenvironmental laboratories, and occasionally support student placements and teaching activities.

You will also collaborate closely with clients, regulatory bodies, and academic colleagues, providing expert advice and contributing to publications of international standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage archaeological science research projects, ensuring timely delivery and quality outputs.
  • Provide specialist expertise in archaeobotanical analysis (pollen, plant macrofossils, phytoliths) and, ideally, maintain knowledge of geoarchaeological processes and deposit modelling.
  • Oversee fieldwork, including borehole sampling, and laboratory analyses.
  • Compile and interpret data to produce detailed technical reports.
  • Supervise technical staff and manage laboratory operations efficiently.
  • Contribute to academic publications and scientific outreach activities.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to ensure compliance and effective project execution.
  • Support student placements and provide guidance in laboratory or field settings where required.

Candidate Requirements

Essential:

  • MSc (or equivalent) in Quaternary Science, Environmental Archaeology, Geoarchaeology, or related discipline.
  • Specialist expertise in at least one area of archaeobotanical analysis.
  • Competency in project management and experience delivering complex projects.
  • Strong data interpretation and reporting skills.
  • Experience in archaeological fieldwork, particularly borehole operations.
  • Ability to build relationships, work flexibly, and mentor junior staff.

Desirable:

  • Broad knowledge of geoarchaeological processes and environmental deposit modelling.
  • Previous experience in academic or developer-funded research.
  • Interest in teaching and mentoring students.
