Role Overview

The University of Reading is seeking an experienced Campus Development Director to lead the strategic planning, delivery, and evolution of our campus estates. This is a rare opportunity to influence the long-term development of our facilities, combining operational excellence with visionary leadership.

Reporting to the Director of Estates, you will:

  • Lead the Campus Development Department, including major construction and infrastructure projects.
  • Translate the University’s strategic objectives into a comprehensive campus development portfolio.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Embed sustainability principles and align all initiatives with the University’s Decarbonisation Plan
  • Manage and inspire a diverse team, from senior managers to operational staff, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement the campus development strategy aligned with University objectives.
  • Provide expert guidance on capital planning, procurement, and project risk management.
  • Champion sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental compliance in all campus projects – UK Sustainability Guidance

Project & Programme Management

  • Oversee the delivery of large-scale, multi-stakeholder projects, ensuring compliance with best practice and regulatory standards – Construction Design & Management Regulations
  • Monitor progress, budgets, and resource allocation, reporting to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including academic departments, professional services, and student representatives.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire the campus development team.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and professional growth.
  • Ensure high-quality governance, safety, and compliance across all operations – Health & Safety Executive

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with external partners, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
  • Communicate effectively with senior leadership, governing bodies, and key campus stakeholders.
  • Represent the University at strategic forums and national initiatives related to estates and infrastructure.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a visionary leader with:

  • Extensive experience in senior-level management of estates, campus development, or large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Strong strategic thinking and financial management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
  • A relevant degree and professional qualification (e.g., RICS
    , CIOB, or RIBA).

Desirable: MSc/MBA, project/programme management certification (e.g., PRINCE2, MSP), and experience in sustainability frameworks such as BREEAM – BREEAM Guidance

You should thrive in complex, multi-stakeholder environments, with the ability to inspire teams, deliver high-quality projects, and create a sustainable and future-focused campus.
