Role Overview

We are seeking an accomplished Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) to lead and shape our Colposcopy Service. This senior clinical role combines expert autonomous practice with service leadership, quality assurance, and workforce development. You will oversee delivery of the National Cervical Screening Programme locally, ensure full compliance with BSCCP standards, and work closely with medical, nursing, and administrative colleagues to deliver safe, compassionate, and effective care for women.

As Lead Nurse Colposcopist, you will be a visible clinical leader, supporting innovation, audit, and continuous improvement while maintaining the highest standards of patient experience and clinical governance.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice & Patient Care

  • Provide advanced, autonomous clinical care to women attending colposcopy clinics, including comprehensive history taking, holistic assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up within your scope of practice.
  • Demonstrate expert clinical judgement and evidence-based decision making in complex and sensitive clinical situations.
  • Support medical-led clinics when required, contributing to service resilience and continuity.

Leadership & Service Management

  • Lead, coordinate, and develop all nursing activity within the Colposcopy Service.
  • Act as a professional role model, supporting supervision, education, and development of nursing staff.
  • Work in partnership with the Lead Colposcopist and Specialty Manager to ensure national standards are met and service developments are implemented effectively.

Quality, Governance & Data

  • Oversee quality assurance processes aligned to the National Cervical Screening Programme and BSCCP guidance.
  • Ensure accurate data collection, validation, and timely submission of mandatory returns, including KC65, quarterly, and annual performance reports.
  • Lead or contribute to audit, service evaluation, and research activity to support continuous improvement.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Ensure effective use and management of clinical resources, including equipment maintenance and compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Maintain oversight of documentation, data entry, and audit processes across the service.

  • Maintain strong communication across the multidisciplinary team.

Attend and actively contribute to:

  • Monthly Colposcopy MDT meetings
  • Quarterly Plymouth and Cornwall Board meetings
  • South Colposcopy Leads meetings
  • Colposcopy and Cervical Screening Business Group meetings (key member)

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Current NMC registration.
  • Educated to Master’s level or equivalent.
  • University qualification in autonomous or advanced clinical practice (e.g. MSc Advanced Clinical Practice or PGCert Advanced Clinical Skills).
  • Completion of extended role competencies relevant to colposcopy, including BSCCP Diagnosis and Treatment accreditation.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Teaching, assessing, or mentoring qualification.
  • Leadership or management qualification.

Essential Experience

  • Substantial post-registration nursing experience, including gynaecology outpatients and/or colposcopy.
  • Experience of audit, service evaluation, or research.
  • Demonstrable clinical leadership experience.
