Job Description

About BSEER and IEDE

The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources (BSEER) is a globally leading faculty addressing sustainability challenges across the built environment. Within BSEER, the Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE) specialises in research and teaching that explore the interactions between buildings, human health, wellbeing, productivity, and energy use. Our mission is to create healthier, more efficient, and low-carbon built environments through interdisciplinary research and practice.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Lecturer in Sustainable and Low-Carbon Building Technologies to contribute to research and teaching in future building services engineering design and dynamic performance simulation of complex buildings, with particular emphasis on detailed HVAC modelling.

You will join the BSc/MEng Sustainable Built Environments, Energy and Resources (SBEER) programme, now in its third year, to train students in practical design, dynamic simulation, regulatory compliance, and building safety. Your teaching will use advanced simulation tools (e.g., EnergyPlus, DesignBuilder) and draw on your research expertise and professional experience. You will guide students from baseline compliance-driven models toward genuinely low-carbon, high-performance building designs.

You will also develop and lead a research programme in sustainable and low-carbon building technologies, focusing on building services design and dynamic simulation of complex, highly serviced buildings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including supervision of dissertations and projects.
  • Apply building performance simulation tools for teaching and research purposes.
  • Develop an independent research agenda in sustainable and low-carbon building technologies.
  • Publish high-quality research outputs and contribute to knowledge transfer and professional practice.
  • Engage in professional accreditation processes and maintain or work toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status through institutions such as CIBSE.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across UCL and external partners to advance interdisciplinary research and innovation.

Person Specification

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in building services engineering, environmental design, energy systems, building performance simulation, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of research in sustainable and low-carbon building technologies or building performance simulation of complex buildings.
  • Expertise in dynamic performance simulation, including detailed HVAC modelling and multi-disciplinary building design.
  • Experience teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level and supervising student projects.
  • Chartered or near-chartered status (CEng or equivalent) with eligibility and motivation to obtain CEng.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical knowledge to students and external stakeholders.

What We Offer

UCL provides a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • 41 days holiday (27 annual leave, 8 bank holidays, 6 closure days)
  • Option to purchase an additional 5 days of leave
  • CARE pension scheme (defined benefit)
  • Cycle-to-work scheme and season ticket loans
  • Immigration and relocation support for eligible posts
  • On-site nursery and gym facilities
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption pay
  • Employee Assistance Programme and discounted medical insurance

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

UCL values diversity as a driver of innovation and creativity. We aim to foster an inclusive environment where staff and students can thrive. Applicants from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply, including:

  • People from ethnic minority backgrounds
  • Disabled candidates
  • LGBTQI+ individuals
  • Women applying for Grade 9 and 10 roles

Our IEDE department holds an Athena SWAN Silver award in recognition of our commitment to gender equality in academic and research careers.

Visa Sponsorship

UCL welcomes applications from international candidates and holds a licence to sponsor skilled worker visas where eligible. Eligibility for visa sponsorship will depend on the post and candidate meeting UK Visas and Immigration requirements.
