Overview of the Opportunity
Cumbria Health is inviting expressions of interest from qualified General Practitioners who would like to work in our Out-of-Hours (OOH) primary care service across multiple sites in Cumbria. Please be aware that submitting an expression of interest does not guarantee availability of shifts matching your preferred site or working pattern.
Our GPs play a vital role within the organisation and are accountable to both the Chief Executive and the Medical Director. You will deliver high-quality, patient-focused primary care services across our locations, ensuring safe, evidence-based management of patients who require medical support outside routine hours.
Shifts are available on a permanent, part-time basis, with flexibility for job-sharing.

Available Sites & Typical Shift Patterns
- Barrow – Furness General Hospital
- Weekend daytime
- Midweek nights
- Kendal – Westmorland General Hospital
- Friday to Monday nights
- Whitehaven – West Cumberland Hospital
- Mostly weekends
- Some midweek evenings
- Penrith – Penrith Hospital
- Predominantly weekends
- Approx. 10 hours per week possible
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care Delivery
- Provide a full spectrum of general medical services during out-of-hours and occasional in-hours periods
- Manage patient presentations including telephone triage, face-to-face consultations, examination, diagnosis and treatment
- Arrange investigations and refer to external services when appropriate
- Provide urgent health advice, preventive care and health promotion interventions
Safe Prescribing & Medicines Governance
- Prescribe in accordance with current clinical guidance and Cumbria Health medicines management procedures
Record Keeping & Information Management
- Use electronic clinical systems effectively and safely
- Maintain accurate, high-quality medical records
- Ensure that all relevant patient information is communicated to their registered GP by the next working day
Quality, Governance & Professionalism
- Deliver clinical care in accordance with Cumbria Health’s quality standards
- Engage in clinical audit, risk management and reflective practice

Person Specification
Eligibility & Personal Attributes
Essential:
- Appropriate personal clinical indemnity
- Motivated, reliable and enthusiastic
- Good attendance record
- Ability to adapt to different sites, teams and clinical systems
- Capacity to travel to fulfil shift requirements
Desirable:
- No restrictions or conditions by the GMC
- No history of professional misconduct
Qualifications
Essential:
- Fully qualified medical practitioner with full GMC registration
- Evidence of GP experience or equivalent certification
- Listed on the NHS Medical Performers List (England)
Desirable:
- Postgraduate qualifications relevant to GMS/PMS service delivery
Experience & Skills
Essential:
- Competent in using clinical IT systems
- Experience in clinical governance, audits and risk management
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across organisations and services
- Previous provision of GMS/PMS services
- Evidence of ongoing CPD
Desirable:
- Experience in GP clinical leadership
