Job Description

Overview of the Role

The University of Reading invites applications for a Research Software Engineer to join the National Centre for Atmospheric Science – Computational Modelling System (NCAS-CMS) team. This is an exciting permanent role where you will develop, maintain, and support advanced software and data workflows for high-performance and emerging Exascale computing platforms.

You will contribute to both operational support and innovation within NCAS-CMS, helping enhance modelling workflows, infrastructure, and the group’s digital presence. This position combines technical expertise, problem-solving, and software development in a collaborative, high-impact research environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain software on HPC systems and emerging Exascale computing platforms.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute complex modelling workflows and simulations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced technical queries from specialist users.
  • Develop and maintain robust data management services, ensuring workflow reproducibility.
  • Manage internal CMS infrastructure, including improving the CMS web presence and producing technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with CMS group members to showcase research outputs and software innovations.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language: Python, FORTRAN, C, or C++.
  • Familiarity with modern software development practices, including version control, testing, and workflow automation.
  • Undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a numerically or computationally intensive field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and motivation to improve existing systems and processes.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience working with HPC systems or large-scale scientific computing environments.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication skills for both technical documentation and user support.
