Role Overview
The School of Agriculture, Policy & Development is seeking a talented and forward-thinking Lecturer in Crop Protection to join the Department of Crop Science. This appointment is central to strengthening the University’s research and teaching portfolio in crop protection, sustainable agriculture, and climate-resilient food systems.
You will contribute across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, participate in departmental and School-wide activities, and engage actively with external stakeholders. The role also offers rich opportunities to collaborate with colleagues involved in the University’s major research initiative, AgriFood Futures, which aims to drive innovation in global agri-food systems to 2050.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Innovation
Conduct and publish high-quality research in crop protection and allied fields.
Develop research projects aligned with themes such as:
- Climate-smart pest forecasting and modelling
- Resistance management and evolutionary-informed strategies
- Precision agriculture, remote sensing and AI technologies
- Microbial biocontrol, plant–microbiome interactions, and biopesticides
- Pursue external research funding and contribute to interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Engage with AgriFood Futures, supporting cutting-edge research aligned with sustainable, climate-resilient farming.
Teaching & Student Engagement
- Deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and Master’s levels.
- Design and assess modules in crop protection and related disciplines.
- Provide supervision, pastoral support and academic guidance to students.
Academic Citizenship
- Participate in departmental administration, quality assurance and outreach activity.
- Help shape a collaborative and research-active academic environment.
About You
You should be an enthusiastic academic able to enrich the department’s expertise and contribute to its global reputation.
Essential Criteria
- A PhD (or equivalent) in crop science, plant protection, agricultural sciences, or a related field.
- Evidence of high-quality research outputs or impact.
- Successful record of securing external research funding.
- Strong understanding of modern and emerging practices in crop protection.
- Teaching experience within a higher-education setting.
- Excellent communication, presentation and academic writing skills.
- Commitment to building a research portfolio aligned with the University’s AgriFood Futures strategy, especially climate adaptation and nature-positive farming.
