About Us

The UCL Hawkes Institute is a multidisciplinary research centre that brings together expertise from Mathematical & Computational Sciences, Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, and Computer Science, alongside researchers from 10 departments across four faculties.

The Institute, based at 90 High Holborn alongside the UCL AI Centre, drives innovation at the intersection of medical imaging, data science, and clinical research.

The post is hosted within the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, an internationally recognised centre of excellence, known for cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and world-class training programmes.

About the Role

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Data Scientist Engineer to join the Quantitative Neuroradiology Initiative (QNI)—part of the UCL Biomedical Research Council’s strategic research programme.

This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of advanced quantitative imaging tools for neurological disorders such as dementia, multiple sclerosis, and glioma.

Working closely with Dr. Ferran Prados Carrasco and a multidisciplinary research team, the postholder will focus on the design, implementation, and validation of quantitative image analysis pipelines and clinical reporting systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement advanced quantitative imaging analysis methodologies.
  • Design, optimise, and validate imaging tools for use in neurological disease diagnosis and monitoring.
  • Integrate algorithms into clinical reporting platforms in collaboration with hospital partners.
  • Conduct data analysis and manage large imaging datasets.
  • Prepare scientific manuscripts, progress reports, and presentations for conferences and funding bodies.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary teamwork across engineering, computer science, and clinical domains.

About You

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • PhD (or near completion) in medical imaging, bioinformatics, data science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in image processing, machine learning, or scientific software development.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB, or C++).
  • Proven ability to develop and apply image analysis algorithms.
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong publication record.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with clinical imaging data (MRI, CT, PET).
  • Understanding of quantitative neuroradiology or neuroimaging.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data management or AI frameworks.
