Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Specialty Medicine Division for an experienced and motivated Ward Manager to lead the C5 Acute Medicine and Endocrine Ward, a 27-bedded unit located in the Louisa Martindale Building at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

We are seeking a dynamic and compassionate leader with exceptional communication and organisational skills to coordinate and inspire the nursing team in delivering safe, effective, and high-quality patient care every day.

The successful candidate will work closely with an experienced Clinical Matron and be supported to develop their leadership potential while contributing to the delivery of the Trust’s strategic and operational goals.

This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route, provided applicants meet the required skill, salary (£25,000 minimum), and qualification thresholds.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Provide strong, visible, and effective leadership to the ward nursing team.
  • Motivate, inspire, and develop staff to maintain a high standard of care.
  • Coordinate daily operations and ensure safe patient flow within the unit.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive team culture where staff feel supported and valued.
  • Ensure compliance with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards and Trust policies.

Clinical and Operational Responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for maintaining high clinical standards and ensuring patient safety.
  • Promote best practices in infection prevention and control, maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Oversee the delivery of holistic care, ensuring patients are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.
  • Actively monitor and improve key performance indicators (KPIs) related to patient care, safety, and efficiency.
  • Support staff with clinical decision-making and ongoing professional development.

Resource and Performance Management

  • Manage ward budgets and ensure effective use of resources.
  • Oversee staffing levels, rostering, and skill mix to meet patient needs.
  • Participate in divisional and Trust-level meetings, contributing to strategic goals and service improvements.
  • Lead and support change management initiatives in line with Trust policy.

Education and Professional Development

  • Act as a mentor and role model for junior staff, ensuring high-quality supervision and appraisal processes.
  • Identify learning needs within the team and support continuous professional development.
  • Deliver training and educational support to improve nursing practice and clinical outcomes.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Registered Nurse (NMC, UK).
  • Completion of a Diabetes Module.
  • Extensive clinical experience in Diabetes, Endocrinology, or Acute Medicine.
  • Mentorship qualification or equivalent (e.g., Practice Supervisor/Practice Assessor).
  • Proven ability to coordinate a multidisciplinary team and manage daily ward operations.
  • Understanding of key performance indicators (KPIs) and performance management.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify staff development needs and implement strategies to support them.
  • Experience in implementing and improving nursing practice standards.

Desirable

  • Care of the Acutely Ill Adult module.
  • Immediate or Advanced Life Support (ILS/ALS) certification.
  • PFIS or Quality Improvement training.
  • Experience in conflict resolution and change management.
  • Understanding of ward budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Proven performance management experience.
